Who remembers playing a dos game called Stronghold? That was one of my all time favorite strategy/castle/management games, which was particularly one of the best games (in my opinion anyway ) at the time when DOS was the only operating system around.
It's just that game that captures a concept that every role player would appreciate: Its based loosely on the classical Dungeons and Dragons engine, and it sets you in the middle of a hostile land where your kingdom must survive against formidable enemies, randomly generated for each map you choose. Having a good mix of fighters, elves, dwarves and magicians can be vital to the success of many a battle. Managing your lands to ensure that you have enough housing and that your food storage is sufficient to survive the winter becomes a never ending battle...usually an uphill one if you don't find mines early enough in the game to assist you in boosting income.
Re-playability is endless...if games like Stronghold is your cup of tea of course. You might be lucky and encounter weaker monsters in the beginning of the game, which gives you a chance to build up some veteran units. Or unlucky like me once, who had the misfortune of placing my stronghold smack dab right next a Fire Giants lair, right at the start of the game, as you can imagine the game didn't last very long...
I still find myself playing Stronghold every now and then, if you submerge yourself into the management of your lands and having to build small bands of skirmish units to repel hostile enemies...you'll find that you'll be occupied for hours on end, just trying to get your kingdom to thrive to the next change of season.
So yeah, who wants to share any memorable moments or just land a comment about what they thought of playing Stronghold.
